In the new curriculum, writing consists of two areas: Transcription (spelling and handwriting) & Composition (articulating ideas and structuring them in speech and writing). We use cross-curriculum themes to engage and stimulate writing; adapting our planning to suit the children's interests. Children have opportunities to write for a range of purposes.
Correct letter formation is vital to ensure efficient fluent writing. Our expectations are that the majority of children will leave year 2 with fluent joined writing. Where children need extra support, specific intervention work will take place.
Children are expected to know and use the age-related words in their independent writing. Each week in spelling lessons, the children are taught a new rule/spelling pattern which they are expected to learn for the weekly spelling test. These rules/patterns come from the National Curriculum appendix (please see below).
